Facebook vs. Google: who does not innovate?

I am a big fan of Google, and a not-so-big fan of Facebook (Join my Facebook page by the way). The rumour and subsequent announcement of the Facebook Email services have generated a hype for a few days now, with speculation on how Facebook new messaging system would work better than Google’s Priority Inbox, etc.

Now as dust starts to settle, I recall the hype we got when Google rolled out Google Wave.

When they unveiled Google Wave, they thought it was their 21st century answer of email. It was all very nice, and I have used it. Unfortunately, everyone is still sticking with email. Google Wave has never got a whole lot of users, and except a few tech savvy friends of mine who do use Google Wave, most people did not really bother even to try, sadly. With not enough users, you cannot generate enough of network effect for Google Wave to be a really useful communication tools. To me, it deserves to be used more often.

Fred Wilson thinks Google and Facebook ceased to innovate. My answer: if there is anyone of them who ceased to innovate, it was Facebook.
